So what is SEO?
SEO, short for Search Engine Optimisation, is the technique adopted by Search Marketers to achieve higher positions and greater appearance on key search engines, notably Google, Yahoo and MSN/Bing.
What are keywords or search terms?
Search terms are phrases or keywords that people will type into a Search Engine. These form the basic building block for SEO, we identify the keywords that you want to appear for that are relevant to your business. For example, you may sell shoes and Jimmy Choo is your strongest selling line, therefore “Jimmy Choo shoes” would be agreed with you to be a keyword.
How do you determine what keywords I want to SEO for my website?
Before commencing any project we always research and propose the top five search terms to be targeted to your homepage to rank for. If further pages within your website are being targeted, keywords will be researched after signing with us. All research is conducted by our SEO Strategy department, keywords are selected based on objectives, product/service offering, competition, and keyword search volume as reported by Google.
What is the objective of SEO?
SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is the art of optimising your website for Search Engine presence/appearance for the agreed keywords. This, in itself, is a broad definition. You may have thousands of keywords based on the number of products and services that you offer, therefore careful consideration is taken when selecting keywords to optimise. Please see how we determine the keywords in a later question.
What do you do to SEO a website?
SEO can be broken down into two clear categories, on-page and off-page. On-page consists of any changes to your website that sites “server side”. This includes things such as website content, coding amendments (whilst still maintaining the same look of your website), URL structures. As many best practice changes will be made depending on your functionality and your consent. Off-page SEO is building of links from other websites back to yours. There are many link building methods varying from low/high quality, low/high volume, low/high cost. Our objective to achieve page one rankings is best achieved through a natural mixture of all these methods. Please speak to our sales or account management team to discuss the best strategy for your needs.
What if I do not want to do on-page optimisation, I only want to build links?
Strategies are always tailored to the needs, limitations, and objectives of our clients. In all circumstances, on-page is an important part of SEO, however if you wish to optimise your website through off-page linking methods only this can still deliver results. Please speak with the Sales or Account Management team to discuss your objectives and best practice strategy.
How do you determine the cost I need to spend to SEO my website?
The cost of SEO is a monthly fee and directly proportional to the competition for your target keywords to appear on page one. For example, the competition on page one of Google for “cheap flights” is much higher than a niche industry like “teapot manufacturers”. A quick way of analysing the competition for your market is by looking at the number of search results for a keyword (top right of a Google search, the higher the number of results the more content that Google has indexed as being relevant for this term) and the Page Rank of pages appearing on page one of Google.
What is Page Rank?
Page Rank, or Toolbar Page Rank, is an external index that the Google algorithm gives to each page that Google has seen as an indicator of it’s authority. Page Rank is a logarithmic scale ranging from 0 to 10, only a handful of websites on the internet reaching the top level. The higher the Page Rank, the more authority the page has in Google’s eyes and therefore more likely to appear for related keywords that is in the content than a similar page with a lower Page Rank. The Toolbar Page Rank shown by Google is just an external indicator, and is only to be used as guide. As we say, Page Rank is Vanity, Rankings are Sanity!!
