Google Announces Possible New Venture
March 12th, 2010 by Geoff
Google has announced that they are indeed looking into a more “intellectual based” search engine. Peter Norvig, Google’s director of research, says that the company is mulling a change in the company’s role in academia. For example, Google are looking to start moving from that of a quick and instant answer to that of a more “curriculum-based” research tool, according to CNET.
The tech news website reports that “the knowledge gained from services like Google can be a mile wide and an inch deep: data points don’t organize themselves into concepts and ideas,” adding that Norvig’s new proposals are aimed at addressing such concerns. While Google already offers an academic search engine, this simply makes educational papers accessible in the same way that its search engine does web pages.
It is thought that Google feels the need to do a better job of supporting people who are taking a class or want to really learn instead of just a quick fix solution.
Experts say that search engine optimization (SEO) would be affected by the launch of such a project, but there is insufficient information available to indicate exactly how: It could boost potential SEO projects with even more businesses wanting to get to the top of Google; however it could also be seen to outcast SEO techniques, with the possible distinction of the “old” Google.
