Motorola has announced a partnership with Microsoft to have search engine, Bing on their Android smartphones in China. Android, is of course Google’s mobile operating system and China represents the world’s largest mobile market.
The deal comes amid ongoing ‘talks’ between Google and China over the future of Google in the Asian nation, after Google threatened to leave following what they described as “cyberattacks” in January.
Microsoft Bing’s search and map services will be loaded on to new Android phones this quarter with updates available for people existing phones on the market, Motorola confirmed. The phones will come with a Bing bookmark already loaded in the browser and a “search widget” although Google will be an option when the phone is switched on. It is thought that as Google is the second most popular search engine after Baidu in China, many people will still opt for it over Bing.
Speculation from the Wall Street Journal says that Motorola is planning for a future when Google may pull out of China. Reuters says that “Having search alternatives on the Android phones should lessen Motorola’s dependence on Google.”
