In order for Google to gain a better share of the search market in China they have decided to set up a new site Google.cn and they have said that they will censor their own search results. Google have done this due to the fact that the Beijing authorities have been blocking certain information and this is frustrating for users. Google’s statement reads “While removing search results is inconsistent with Google’s mission, providing no information… is more inconsistent with our mission “.
It’s argued that this version of Google could restrict access to certain sensitive search phrases and websites, for example the Tiananmen Square massacre back in 1989. There are also concerns regarding personal information given, therefore, Google will not be providing blogging, email or chat room facilities on Google.cn for fear that the Government could force them to hand over personal information. Google have stated that they will inform users if information has been restricted.
This comes weeks after the US department of Justice tried to get Google to disclose data on what people were searching for, Google managed to resist this, but fears are still rife.
There are currently 100 million search users in China and Google is currently losing some of this number to Biadu.com. The number of searchers is due to rise to approximately 185 million within two years and Google wants to ensure that they increase their share as they have in other countries and dominate the market.
