Microsoft Increases Market Share but Google are still Top of the Search Tree

January 26th, 2010 by

The latest data released from comScore explains global search results for 2009, with some very familiar trends, as well as some very interesting new trends.

The most obvious and familiar trend is Google retaining its lead among the search made worldwide, however the most surprising new trend is that Microsoft has increased its market share considerably.  Of the top three major search engines Yahoo got the lowest percentage change, year on year, for 2009.  Google had 87.8 billion searches in 2009 which is a 58% increase from 2008, a lo0ng way behind came Yahoo with 9.4 billion searches and a 13% increase from 2009. The main surprise of the new data is Microsoft who came in fourth place with 4.1 billion searches – a huge 70% leap from 2008 search market data.

Highlights of comScore’s study show a 46% increase in total searches made worldwide, reaching 131 billion searches in 2009, up from 89 billion in 2008.  This equates to an amazing total of 4 billion searches conducted worldwide on a daily basis.  Un-surprisingly the U.S. search market remains the biggest in the world with 22.7 billion searches made in 2009, representing a total of 17% of all worldwide searches made.  China were ranked at number two with 13.3 billion searches and not so closely followed by Japan with 9.2 billion.  The U.K. had 6.2 billion searches, up from 4.6 billion in 2008 and representing a 35% growth year on year
