Yahoo! Provides Real Time Search Suggestions

July 5th, 2010 by

Yahoo has launched new algorithm that give near real-time suggestions for enquiries for Yahoo! Search Assist. Google launched its real-time search in December providing the latest news and information from Twitter, news, blogs and other websites when searching.
According to Linda Wang, Yahoo’s Senior Product Manager, search results on Yahoo will now show recent news or events related to your search. This means that Yahoo will provide you with the freshest content available online, also known as ‘near real-time’. When you search a topic the results will the freshest content available nearest to the time of the search.
Wang uses the example of typing ‘Netherlands VS’ into the Yahoo! News Search to find which team will play as opponent. She continuous to explain that “out of the first search suggestions are today’s game lineup. Click on the first search suggestion, I will be able to complete the search results page to see event information. ”
Although this is a useful tool when you are searching for the latest news it does however rely on short term relevancy as opposed to the best and most relevant results.
Wang further comments that this will mean that users will find the most timely information quickly and hopes that this will enhance users search experience.
Like Google, Yahoo! will also be sourcing real-time information from different platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Flickr.
Yahoo! is also set to launch The Upshot on the 6 July offering information on the most searched phrases and keywords.  Yahoo!  tracks search traffic patterns and will be using these to help journalists create more personalised content for readers. This will especially benefit advertisers targeting a specific audience.
