Microsoft is sponsoring The Simpsons on Channel 4, as part of a multi million pound campaign to promote its search engine, Bing.
The tailored adverts that feature families using the search engine, will be aired on Channel 4 and Channel 4 +1, before and after each episode, as well as during the advertising breaks. The sponsorship deal that runs until June, ties in with the show’s 20th anniversary.
This deal sees two firsts, not only is it the first time Microsoft has sponsored a UK TV programme but it is also the first time a technology company has sponsored the popular show. It is not, however the first time Microsoft has sponsored a US cartoon series, it has previously sponsored Family Guy but in October 2009 it pulled the sponsorship deal as the show’s content “did not fit with the company’s brand.”
The sponsorship deal is part of a major advertising campaign by Microsoft with the aim of increasing the amount of people using Bing and includes TV adverts which are already being shown.
