Daily Mail falls foul of spoof Steve Jobs tweet
June 28th, 2010 by Geoff
The Daily Mail has fallen foul of a tweet sent by @ceoSteveJobs on the micro-blogging site, Twitter, claiming that a recall for the recently released iPhone 4 was imminent. The tweet was picked up earlier this week, on Sunday morning, after being posted on the social networking site in the early hours of the morning. A story was then written based on the spoof tweet and posted on the Daily Mail website, claiming that the tweet was genuine and speculating over the scale and cost of a mass recall.
The Twitter account in question is clearly marked in the biography as a parody account, and the timeline shows many varied comments which are clearly a parody of Apple marketing speak and makes light of the recent traumas Apple has suffered, such as a prototype of the latest iPhone being discovered in a Californian bar, and the subsequent reception issues that has affected the handset after release.
The erroneous story was taken down later on Sunday, however it was still being indexed by Google and appearing in Google News results late on Sunday night. It is not believed that Steve Jobs uses social networking sites, such as Twitter or Facebook, however he has been known to reply directly to customer emails himself. Parody Twitter accounts are commonplace on the site, however the company have introduced a ‘verified’ property to ensure that celebrities and public figures can highlight they are official twitter feeds.
