Google is going to start competing with other internet telephone companies like Skype for free calls via its web based email service. The users will be able to make calls to other mobiles and landlines from their Gmail account. Anywhere in the US and Canada will be free until the end of this year. Previously Google has offered computer to computer video and voice services.
This will mean that millions of Gmail users will be able to make phone calls from their Gmail page. They won’t need to download any additional software. It will mean low cost communication and a more efficient way to communicate. Within the “Chat” window on the left hand side of the Gmail page the link will appear and a “phone call” option will pop up with a dialing pad to dial the number you want.
Google hopes to roll out this product worldwide. It is in negotiations to install red “Google” telephone boxes with a number of universities and airports. It hopes to attract non Gmail users to try this new service.
