Google offers improved Commerce Search

June 18th, 2010 by

Google said it has updated its Commerce Search tool, allowing online sellers to better customise their retail site search offerings.

Commerce Search was launched last year and allows online retailers use Google’s cloud-based engine to enable customers to search for items for sales on a site.

This launch of the new commerce search version 2.0 has most certainly ruffled some feathers in the industry of search engine optimisation as it begs the question “Is the future of Search Engine optimisation companies safe?”

Google said Commerce Search 2.0 adds a ‘merchandising dashboard’ that gives retailers more control over promotions, ranking rules and filtering. Simplified creation ranking rules mean seasonal optimisations can be done on the fly, the firm said.

Retailers can now offer general queries to shoppers in real time, as they type, without any custom coding. Google also says the service is faster and more relevant than before thanks to search quality improvements.

Many shoppers depend on the search bar on retail sites when they’re looking to make a purchase, but some people will always prefer to navigate through different categories and discover new products

Google Commerce Search allows guests to shop by browsing around your site as well as searching directly for products.

For end-users Google Commerce Search 2.0 offers enhanced user understanding on the website, consequentially giving Improved user experience meaning faster and more relevant results. Improved user experience also means being able to browse around the website as well as going directly to a product.   The function to allow Auto-completion of queries, also just like on regular Google searches, will also make shoppers happier while providing retailers with the opportunity to offer common queries in real time.

This new version will obviously take effect straight away but will take a short while to see what the effects are in terms of search engine optimisation strategies; looking at how search engine companies can help one’s website, if Google are already offering optimisation packages anyway.
