A post on the official Twitter blog has announced official numbers relating to the global growth of the popular microblogging site which confirms just how much people are utilising social media and more specifically, blogging as part of their every day lives.
Known for its popularity in the US, these new statistics show that more than 60% of Twitter users are now from outside the U.S which is a dramatic turnaround from the early days when Twitter’s users were primarily employees and friends. Twitter users are now from all over the globe, but not only from the large countries you would expect, but smaller countries such as Vatican City and there is even one from outer space!
Twitter is currently available in French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish and at the recent CTIA conference, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said they are hoping the list won’t end there. “We want Twitter to be available in as many languages as possible,” he said.
Aside from offering Twitter in the different languages, they are also developing it so can be easy to use on mobile phones to maximise the market. Twitter has deals with 65 mobile operators that allow their users to send and receive tweets over SMS at no additional cost, he said.
With these new developments and significant growth in every country it goes to show that Twitter has now evolved from a mere social networking micro-blogging platform to an effective and reliable communication tool.
