Social Media Optimisation, Hints, Tips & Advice on SMO

January 5th, 2010 by

Social media optimisation or (SMO), a key buzzword for 2010, is the latest way to attract visitors to your website by promoting and publicising it via social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr, and blogging sites such as Blogger, Squidoo, Weebly and WordPress.

Social Media Optimisation is not a completely new concept, however in 2009 and moving into 2010 more people will look to reap the rewards of optimising their online marketing campaign with a far greater focus on Social Media.  To demonstrate the importance of Social Media – on the 24th and 25th December 2009, for the first time ever Facebook had more visits than Google in a single day.  The significance of Facebook’s victory over Google cannot be underestimated, and perfectly illustrates the importance of Social Media in today’s online world.

Social Media Optimization is only a part of the process in developing a strong Social Media marketing campaign, and can only be achieved by building long-term, mutually rewarding relationships with your target users.

Social Media Optimization can be achieved in two ways – Firstly by creating valuable and relevant content, which will be of direct interest to the social media community users.  And secondly by creating innovative and eye-catching adverting campaigns that are tailored to the end user that you are targeting.

Both methods offer the reader a warm introduction to the product or service that you are promoting.  Ultimately, the most effective way to succeed in this area is to balance the vigour of your pro-active marketing against allowing users to embrace your product or service and to promote it virally on your behalf.
