Using Twitter To Assist Your SEO

December 29th, 2009 by

The year 2009 has seen the rise of Twitter as not only a social media network but as a live news hub. From the Iran elections to the recent snow around the UK, Twitter has been used to track what is going on around the world. And now, finally Google has started to show twitter posts in its listings.

Google and all the major search engines’ main aim is to list websites which are relevant to the search query entered. Google likes to serve resources to its users, but how can twitter help you with your SEO campaign?

Setting up Your Account

Choosing a relevant account name and username is very important as it will make your account more likely to rank on Google for your keywords, that is then another ranking space for your industry which you occupy.

Make sure your profile/bio is relevant and contains a link to your website, this is (at least currently) a followed link, which will send some authority on to your website.

Tweet Your Blogs

A good start is to ‘tweet’ your blogs, this effectively creates a link from your twitter feed to your blog article. If the article has a keyword rich and relevant title, then when people search Google regarding that subject it may well appear in the search listings, thus providing you with a short term targeted listing for that particular subject.

This is particularly useful for ‘news’ items or new products, this kind of dynamic content serves a purpose and makes you resource in the eyes of the search engines and this is a very good thing.

Relevant Tweets

Don’t just rely on tweeting blogs if you want to make the most of your twitter account. Standalone tweets are also useful, remember that you will have a link on your profile to your website, so if it is interesting and of course relevant then people will continue on to your site.

Remember that above all, Google wants to list resources relevant to a search query, so if your apply this principle to your blogs and twitter posts, you are much more likely to get another listing for those all important keywords.
