Internet Explorer Loses Further Market Share

May 7th, 2010 by

Microsoft’s internet browser, Internet Explorer, has lost further ground in the browser wars it has been revealed this week. The software giant’s browser share has slipped for the first time to under 60%, with Google Chrome gaining ground on second place Mozilla Firefox.
Net Applications’s April market report shows Internet Explorer still taking the lion’s share of the browser market, with 59.95%, however the monthly figures have shown a consistent decline in the number of internet users loading up the Microsoft application.
Google Chrome are the big movers in the browser market, with their share now up from 6.13% to 6.73%. Firefox and Safari also increased their share modestly, both by just 0.07% each in the last month. The April report is indicative of an overall trend in the statistics, with Firefox and Safari’s share remaining relatively constant, Google Chrome increasing their usage and Internet Explorer in a steady decline.
The figures from Net Applications are based on which browser is used to log on to a variety of different websites, which are intended to give a good sample of internet users. Whereas the percentages could potentially be questioned, the overall trends are undeniable and certainly a worry for Microsoft who have been hit hard by the European Commission forcing the company to provide new computer users with a browser choice when they first boot up.
Google will  be pleased with the figures, representing their growing presence in the browser market. Much of this improvement has been attributed to Google’s ability to advertise Google Chrome on it’s widely used search engine homepage.
