Deep linking, should you or shouldn’t you?
August 30th, 2009 by Michael
Okay, so everyone knows what linking is and they understand it, but do you really know what deep linking is and what it can do for you? Deep linking means that you link to information directly on a specific web page of a website instead of linking to the home page. In other words, you link to the third page of the website because of the specific information offered.
So that is what deep linking is, what is so great about it? The good thing about deep links is that they up your search engine optimization efforts. When someone connects to your website through a deep link it increases the rank of that specific page. If you include internal links within your own website, the pages linked to the page with a deep link increase in rank by association.
More than one person benefits from deep linking
The entire concept of search engine optimization revolves around making surfing an easier and more pleasant experience for internet users and to ensure fairness among websites. Considering that, deep linking is hugely beneficial to internet users all over the world. Deep links help them find and get to information faster and with more ease. This is because these links take them straight to the information they want and don’t simply deposit them on a home page and leave them to search for the information on a specific website themselves.
Some people dislike using deep links
So, deep links seem like a great way to build up credibility, popularity, rank and much more. Not only that, but it makes you more popular with the internet users that visit your website, especially if they arrive there via other websites. However, there are businesses out there that do not like using deep links from other websites and this might strike you as strange. After all, why would you not want to take advantage of this search engine optimization tactic? Well, deep links are very focused and your visitors have no reason to want to visit any other pages.
This puts a real damper on your home page advertising and exposure of your other web pages. Normal links deposit your visitors onto your home page and they need to navigate your website from there. They have to search for their desired information by themselves instead of it being handed to them on a silver platter.
This forces your visitors to be exposed to your home page advertising as well as other pages on your website while they search. This offers obvious advantages over deep linking. However, it is ultimately up to you to make the decision between normal links and deep links. You need to weigh up the pros and cons and choose what it going to benefit your business the most in the end.
Optimization benefits
Linking is beneficial to your website whether they are normal links or deep ones. However, deep linking is especially beneficial to specific web pages in your website. As the owner of a business and a website, it is your responsibility to choose which type of links will be maximally beneficial to your search engine optimization efforts.
