This week I have been doing Search Engine Optimisation on an number of sites where duplicate content has been present from all around the web. On further investigation I have come to realise a lot of these instances were affiliates using the same wording,big tip don’t let your affiliates use the same text that’s on your homepage, or another page for that matter as Google, Yahoo! and MSN consider this duplicate content. So what’s wrong with duplicate content? Well when the search engines analyses your site part of their overall ranking comes from the content of the site, if this content is unique the search engines will rank your site well, as the content is giving a unique perspective on a topic. If your content is duplicated all over the web, users don’t want to read the same thing over and over again so it ranks your site poorly for those reasons.There are three type of duplicate content:
1) Affiliates duplicating content as stated above
2) Out and out content theft, believe it happens
3) Internal duplicate content due too poor system architecture
Avoid them all for more on other types of duplicate content check this blog carefully entitle duplicate content
