Get ahead in SEO in the face of tough competition

There may be many reasons why you are falling behind in rankings. If you are tired of seeing your competitors streaking ahead of you then you may have to start fighting harder.
Viable reasons for website not making rankings
Your website could be new. New websites have a notoriously harder time getting indexed because many search engines consider the age of a domain when they calculate rankings. The newer the domain the less interest they generate. You can circumvent this through by creating fabulous search engine friendly content. You can then syndicate it and if other websites consider your website valuable so will the search engines.
You could start a blog on your website. In a short space of time you will have search engines taking notice. The nature of blogs requires frequent updating with informative content which search engines love. You can also create relevant links on your blog which is another thing search engines love.
Find long tail keywords. There are many keywords or keyword phrases out there that you may be unaware of. Spend as much time as you can on keyword research and tweaking your pages around them. Use whatever tools are available to you.
Make a creative video and post it on your website and syndicate it. This does not replace quality link building or on page optimisation but search engines will take notice.
Build your links as this is perhaps one of the most important aspects of SEO. If your domain is new you can start building links on web directories and then announce them on your site using PR network services. You could also consider social networking and bookmarking or join forums and communities that are relevant to your offerings.
When building your links ensure that you find sites that are complimentary to your niche market. It is also advisable to have a good cross section of links. Good content will entice others to link back to you but beware of link exchanges and reciprocal linking. This is not good for SEO as search engines frown on these kinds of links.
Syndicate your content to selected article and video submission sites. Once done promote it to users and communities by tagging your links across social bookmarking sites.
Submit your site map to major search engines. This is in effect the same as an introduction. Once you have introduced yourself your sitemap will serve as an open invitation for search engines to visit you.
Old domains for new websites
Another reason you make not be getting rankings may be due to the fact that you have bought an old domain for your new website. In one respect this is good for SEO as search engines prefer older domains. You still need to optimise your website as you would do for a new website though if you want to increase your rankings.
SEO is about a complete approach and not individual aspects. Even in today’s recession SEO has the ability to help make a business successful.
