Get innovative with your content
April 25th, 2009 by Dan
There is never a shortage of advice on the Internet; in reality you get stoned to death with advice each day. This is very much true when it comes to optimising your website. Everyone is convinced they know best and you should follow their advice. We are all aware that the content of your website stands at the top of the importance list. Many website owners want to scream when they hear the phrase, ‘content is king‘.
The question being asked most is, ‘where am I supposed to dig out good content regularly?’ the problem is that not everyone is an artist, a writer or an SEO guru. You have a website, you run your business, but you need the skills and talents of all the others to make it work. So where do you get it, how do you go about it?
Take a walk outside
Instead of staring yourself blind at the words ‘good content’, take a look at what people find interesting. Have a look at the ratings for instance on YouTube, you will be mighty surprised at what videos are watched the most. People’s attention is drawn by the ordinary, everyday things we see all around us with a twist of fun added to it. Ordinary becomes unusual and you only have to look at the amazing images taken by photographers each day.
Depending on what industry you are in will lead to inspiration. A walk around your own neighbourhood can give you brilliant images to use on your website and blog. Remember that people do live and work in the real world and your website must cater to their needs and interests. Images that appeal mean web traffic and with image tags, the search engines come have a look too.
Barter, buy, trade and use
Not everyone has access to news worthy information. The Internet is a wonderful place though; you can get what you need by using data that belongs to others in a legal way. You don’t have to be the owner of data to use it. You can legally buy or trade and often barter data from other sources to use in visualisations and analysis. As long as you do not infringe on copyrights, you can use any publicly available data and images. With some research you will be able to gather useful data to enhance your own website.
Your image and controversy
Controversy makes many people uncomfortable and they are hesitant to bring controversy to their websites or blogs. Be smart and use controversy by being an outlet for debate. Use a controversial topic from an outside source and get people talking on your blog. Highlight a news worthy event and let people discuss their opposing views on the matter. You do not even have to take sides publicly on this.
You will start a heated debate and if the news item is big, the traffic will increase rapidly to your website or blog. This means other people will create excellent links for you, yet the controversy does not involve your own image at all. Sometimes it is good to think outside the box.
