How to become a successful SEO consultant

July 1st, 2009 by

So you think you know quite a bit about Search Engine Optimisation and would love to be an SEO consultant. You wish to start your own SEO consultancy firm and apply all your SEO techniques to clients that will benefit from your services.

Getting started on your SEO company

Before you can start offering your marketing help, you may need to first, do a little bit of research finding out how many SEO companies there are in your particular area. Analyse your competition. Also find out how many businesses and people situated in the immediate area are likely to use your service and who don’t already have their websites optimised. Make sure that there is a need for the service before you invest all your money and time into establishing your business. You then also need to develop a strong search engine optimisation plan.

Determine how you are going to go about implementing SEO step by step. Sometimes you may have a good idea but write it down so that you can see whether your idea will work and you can strategise a plan to make it work. Also create a plan as to how you wish to link people’s websites. Once you have all of this information and planning, you can now start advertising your services either on the web by creating a site an optimising it or through traditional advertising.

The service that you will need to provide

As an SEO consultant there are a number of tasks you will have to carry out. Usually, a business that approaches you without a website means that you will have to start from scratch. This starts by you having to construct a website for that particular client yourself or you can outsource someone else to do it. When creating the sight you have to ensure that you use relevant keywords related to the type of business.

If the client already has a website, then you might need to edit it to become optimised. This could be done by adding stronger keywords to the content or keyword rich articles. You may need to then build some links to make the sites more visible. Remember that your service should also include a bit of training to your client and you will have to maintain the SEO campaign. You will also need to provide the client with reports on the progress of their site.

Learning to build links

As part of your SEO service you will need to be able to do link building. Link building is the most important off-page SEO aspects and helps increase rankings. These links usually use other websites or pages to direct traffic to your client’s site.

The appearance, freshness and age of links are also highly considered by Search engines. To build effective links as an SEO consultant, you will have to be aware of how many links are too much. Normally 5-10 new links per week is sufficient in order for search engines such as Google not to have any suspicions of foul play.
