Invisible On-page ranking factor

December 12th, 2007 by

Following on from my last blog on visible On-page factors, todays blog is going to cover invisible on page factors.

These consist of Meta description tag, alt Tags, meta keyword tag and architecture. The Meta description tag resides inside the <Head></Head> section of a webpage, the importance of this tag has decreased over the years it primary uses where to provide a description in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs), packed with keywords to aid SEO rankings. Today’s search engine algorithms take on the Meta description is not as prominent but it still has its uses.

An Alt tag is usually invisible to common user, but most helpful screen reader for the visually impaired, text based browsers and SEO. These tags give a description of an Image or a hyperlink Image, these can incorporate cleverly placed keywords to aid SEO.

Meta keywords also go between the <Head> Tags, these should contain keywords and their misspellings. The Meta keywords like the Meta description tags are disputed to their effectiveness within today’s search engines.

Finally, the architecture of the site. This is quite a technical issue but basically in a nutshell when a search engine such as Google evaluates your site, though their various algorithms your structure i.e. the <h1>, <p>, <div> should conform to W3C standard for web development. Any deviation of these standards will result in the search engine algorithm wasting time trying to understand your structure, rather than analyzing it for ranking purposes.

You can check your site structure at http://validator.w3.org/. That’s all the invisible factors covered. In my next blog I will be discussing off-page factors.
