Ranking factors
December 5th, 2007 by Dan
The algorithms which the three main search engines (MSN Google & Yahoo) use to rank their listings are in a constant state of flux. Therefore, to try to tailor a site to a specific search engine is irrelevant in the world of search engine optimisation (SEO). Today’s sites depend on generic factor for ranking with in all search engine these can be split in to two main categories which the developer has control off these are: on-page factor and off page factors the are also some factor which are out of a developer hands these are Time this correspond to how long a site has been up and the standing it has built with in the search engine results page (SERPs) and external factor these are normally unknown right up until the are known, for instance a new competitor targeting the same SEO area with a large budget and a heavily funded PPC campaign you just can’t see thing like that coming and thing like that can really ruin you day. So let get back to the factor we can control, I am going to split these topic in to two blog and today’s blog is going to be about on page visible factor with the other factor being cover in subsequent blogs. So on-page factor can be also split into visible factor and invisible factors.
Visible factors consist of page title, page copy in particular keyword density, out going links and internal structure. Firstly the page title. This is displayed in the blue bar at the top of the page should consist of you select keyword and be as descriptive to the page content as possible with the limit amount of space you have and should change per page not just repeated though out the site. Next comeskeyword density. I cover this in many previous blog so I will not go over it as gain.
Out going links are links to other site which are relevant to your content and practise good methods these improve your listings by identifying your site as having good relating content base have link to poor sites or sites which practise black hat techniques will decreases your rankings. Internal structure relates to the hierarchy of the information (pages) with you sites the lower down the hierarchy a page is the less importance that page is given by the search engine always run your top level page with your most popular topics or product for the best result
