Reinventing as a cure
May 18th, 2009 by Dan
A little reinvention is sometimes needed in our lives. Sometimes we just get stuck in a rut because that is the path of least resistance and it is just plain easy. The same goes for a website. Sometimes you want to keep to the safety of what works because the word “redesign†gives you nightmares. The truth about that is that sticking with what works soon becomes stale and nothing stale ever draws.
The internet it is not all sunshine and roses. If you have nothing new and fresh to offer your visitors they will go elsewhere to find something that is actually interesting. So throw “over-caution†to the wind and start thinking about how to remodel your website. You never know you might just get a surprise and do better than you think. Another plus is that the search engines will come sniff very quickly.
What to get right
There are a few basic key areas that you need to look at when you are thinking of remodelling, redesigning, freshening up or simply redoing. Those main factors are your website’s devilishly good looks, or aesthetics to the more jargon oriented. You also have your content. Your content is what your website has to offer its visitors. These are two parts of the redesigning process that most web designers have down to a tee.
They can whip up a plan of action to make you look even better and to mix up your content in a heartbeat. Then you need to think about your search engine optimisation and user friendliness. Usability means how easy, or how difficult, your website is to use. Remember that you want it to be easy to use and not for Einstein only. As far as your SEO goes, you want to be as visible as possible so this is of the utmost importance to get right when redesigning.
Users come first
Take a look at the usability of your website. Using a template website is the fastest way to frustrate your customers and lose their attention and support. Template websites look and feel generic when you browse through them. Generic does not get remembered, nor does it get repeat traffic. After all, there are millions of other generic template websites to visit, why should yours deserve a repeat visit? A template website also does not allow you to properly cater to your target market. In your overall SEO attempts a generic template website is a huge no-no that you need to avoid at all costs or it will cost you more than you bargained on.
Keep your focus
Unless you want to completely change the purpose and focus of your website you need to constantly keep your reason for being in mind when you attempt to redesign. Remember that redesign does not mean throwing all your current work into the flames and starting over. Remodelling or redesigning your website means taking what you have and freshening it up. Keep in mind that you are probably going to alienate some of your current users, but you can keep their loyalty by not shifting your focus completely. Users come to your website for a reason, changing that reason is not the same as vamping it up.
