Search Engine Optimisation and Link Quality – Part two

April 18th, 2008 by

This blog follows on from my blog on Wednesday, on off page links so far we have covered links in frames, free for all links and the negative effect they have on your site. On the Positive side we have covered anchor text matching your on page keyword. So if everyone is ready and up to date lets carry on with factors to consider when applying for a link.
Next on the list is the PageRank of the site you are requesting a link from. The higher the PageRank of the page the more positive effect it will have on your site. The reason being all sites and pages pass a percentage of their PageRank to the page they link to, although this percentage is divided between the link that the page has on it. I can’t release the exact percentage as I have got to keep some cards close to my chest, but put it this way, the less internal / external links the better, but you will struggle to get a link on a page with less than 40 links on, unless were talking about social media and most of these types of pages don’t have any PR.
As well as PageRank page authority is an important positive factor in linking. Even more so than PageRank what is page authority I here you ask? This is the link between your site and the site with the link on. For instance if you have a link from NASA (the space agency) to your shoe shop site, this has no authority even though it is a powerful site – but if you had a link from NASA to you home made rocket website, the authority will be massive.
We had two positive factors to look for when linking, so now lets have a negative one. Bad neighbourhood sites, this is the daddy when it comes to damage your sites through linking. Bad neighbourhoods are not websites that have street art on or discuss none PC topics! but sites which have been blacklisted by Google. The best way to detect a neighbourhood site is to type into a Google query Site: www.domain.com, if it returns with no results and is not a new site, the chances are you have found a bad neighbourhood.
Right thats all from me this week, I’m going to write part three to this blog next week because it’s such an extensive topic and there’s so much to cover.
