SEO: A Beginners Guide
November 9th, 2007 by Dan
Admitting my own lack of knowledge as a rookie recruit within the area of sales and advertising, I can safely admit that I am no expert when it comes to Search Engine Optimisation: being in this business for only nine days would provide testament to such a statement.
However, after my initial shock and panic I quickly realised that Search Engine Optimisation is actually not as scary as originally thought. Don’t get me wrong, there is a long way to go before I can even be loosely related to an “SEO Guruâ€, but the path has been laid out in front of me and at this present moment in time I have moved on from taking baby steps to walking in a straight line on my own. And I can tie my own shoelaces (none of this Velcro lark – I’m a big boy now).
“So what is Search engine Optimisation?â€
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process where you (or we as a provider) try and ascertain a higher SERP (Search Engine Results Page) listing within Google, Yahoo and MSN. This is achieved by the use of certain keywords that potential customers would use when searching for your product. Obviously, our aim would be to get you onto the first page of the SERP’s in order to maximise your advertising: the majority of people already know that the first page on a search engine site is the most important as this is where the majority of customers will take there business. If you are not on the first page, then there is a greater chance of you not getting the advertisement you need.
The aim is to manage various aspects of a website so that Google, for example, would consistently rank it ahead of other competing websites, resulting in a long-term increase in natural traffic.
“Sounds great, how long will it take for me to get onto the first page? A Month? A week? Tomorrow?!â€
OK, one step at a time. This is not exactly an overnight solution, and anyone who believes that this will happen overnight would need to be educated further on the subject. Achieving a successful ranking on any SERP would take some time, and it would of course differ between certain criteria. Research will need to be undertaken. Results would need to be collected, keywords researched & tested. Websites would require an examination and recommendations put in place in order to achieve maximum advertisement. All the above mentioned, and more, is researched thoroughly so that we can ascertain a relevant timescale for such a project. This would be a long term investment, but one that has a massive reputation to reap rewards for SEO customers.
Also, first page results cannot be guaranteed. The amount of websites that are currently being amended for SEO purposes is phenomenal. There is massive competition when it comes to SEO, and anyone who can promise a first page result to the customer is treading a very fine line. We would never guarantee a first-page listing, but our experience and track record in this area shows that we are as close to a guarantee as you can get.
“OK, give me an example of how this work over a said period of time brings back resultsâ€
If anyone reading this was to type in “Pay Per Click†in Google, you would see that we are at the top of the page in the Sponsored Links. If you were to look at the natural or organic listings below, we appear seventh in the SERP’s. Originally we were not even in the top one hundred when this search was used. We set ourselves a target of 6-9 months to get on that first page. From the work we have undertaken on our site to optimise advertisement in the natural listings, we are now seventh out of a results search of just under twenty five million, and number one on MSN. This result was reached in five months, achieving our goal before our desired target.
Getting to the point, SEO is an ideal way to get your business noticed through natural listings. Results have shown that Search Engine Optimisation is one of the best methods of increasing traffic to your websites, and as I am sure everyone knows, an increase in traffic could result in a potential increase in sales, which is a plus for any potential customer of ours.
