SEO For The Big Three Search Engines

August 9th, 2008 by

In terms of market share and the number of searches conducted, there are three
major search engines that most SEO services considered. While in the UK, figures
do differ slightly, it’s common to concentrate SEO efforts on Yahoo, MSN Live,
and especially Google. In June these three search engines generated 83% of
all online searches in the UK, totalling 2.7 billion searches between them.
Google was responsible for nearly three quarters of all searches with Yahoo
and MSN responsible for 4.3% and 3.4% respectively.

The Search Engines

ASK and AOL are the two closest search engines accounting for 2.4% and 2.3%
each. While it’s true that most people refer to Google when they talk about
search engine optimisation, the other search engines should not be completely
ignored. Optimising for Google does not mean that you instantly alienate Yahoo
or MSN from ranking a page and it is certainly possible to rank well in all
three of them. In doing so you attract a range of different visitors and some
sites in some countries do get better results from other engines.

Two Broad SEO Components

SEO can be split into two very broad components – on-page and off-page optimisation.
On page optimisation includes factors such as the length of the page content,
as well as the inclusion of keywords in tags, titles, and URLs. It also considers
navigation, keyword density, and numerous other aspects. Off-age optimisation
is basically the number and quality of links that direct to a particular page.

On-Page Optimisation

In the early days of search, before advanced algorithms were introduced, on-page
optimisation was virtually the whole picture. Gradually, though, the big three
began to consider links as being a clear indication of the value of a page.
Google was particularly concerned with using links as a judge of a page’s popularity
and this remains true today.

Natural Content

By creating pages that offer naturally written content but still include your
most important keywords you will appease all search engines. While they all
have different requirements page length, it is best to use longer pages because
the page certainly won’t be penalised for this practice – in contrast, Yahoo
in particular tends to offer better rankings to longer pages so a page may
lose some credibility for being too short.

Off-Page Optimisation

Links are important to all three search engines. Google puts a lot more effort
into attempting to determine how much value each of your individual inbound
links has while Yahoo and especially MSN will give virtually every link regardless
of its value or relevance a similar benefit. Concentrating on getting a good
range of links using keywords as anchor text, and concentrating on links from
relevant pages will usually fare well for all three.

SEO For Google, Yahoo, And MSN

Following best practices in design and development, offering genuinely beneficial
and informative content, and building a solid link profile should help generate
good all round SEO results with all of the major search engines and not just
Google. While Google does hold the vast majority of market share, it would
be folly to completely ignore Yahoo and MSN.

Does anyone really optimise for any search engine apart from Google?! If they do then you must question why! the latest figures show Google has more than 90% market share in the search market, but for some reason you find sites that rank high on Google, are ranked quite poor on Yahoo! & MSN, why is this, well the answer is simple, the ranking algorithms are not the same, both Yahoo! and MSN seem to take a lifetime to change ranking results, and seem very static, Google updates on a very regular basis to ensure the sites that appear to rank high give most relevance on there topic! use thw techniques in this blog regarding aspects of Search Engine Optimisation and youw ill not go far wrong.

You should try to create your site in such a way that your site affects all the search engine to improve your site ranking and don’t focus to improve your site ranking in any particular search engine.

  4. Zachary says:

Link building is widely used off page optimization method to improve the ranking of your site in three big search engines i.e. Google, yahoo and MSN but link should be of high quality with best keyword. One of the most important things is that where you have listed your link anchor text, site must be related to your site content or theme.

  5. Emma says:

Most of the people try to create site in such a way that the page rank of site increase in Google search engine but it is not always beneficial for your site popularity. To improve the popularity of your site all over the world is also important, so your site should be good for most of the search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN.

  6. Emily says:

Search engine optimization is used to improve the ranking of your site and it also plays very important role to increase the revenue and profit of your brand. In search engine optimization we are widely used to two methods i.e. on-page and off-page, but value of off-page method is greater than on-page method from SEO point of view.
