SEO is important but it has its trials

June 27th, 2009 by

SEO allows the rich to benefit and the poor get poorer, therein lays the first trial.  Yet it is here to stay until it replaced with something else that is, it is up to you to decide whether your campaign will make you a profit or not.

Not that long ago online marketer’s used PPC, or Pay per Click as the answer to online purchasing and a way to drive traffic to your site, yet it was exploited by those in large corporations who drove the price per click up and up so that it could not remain cost effective unless the margins of return are high.

SEO stepped in as the way for get free traffic from normal listings and is today considered a very cost effective way to optimise websites in order to attract the buying public without the need to pay someone else to do it.

Not one search engine can share what the best ways are to get high rankings although there are many tutorials and a lot of advice about how to get them, the trial is knowing which ones to concentrate on and which ones to implement in order to satisfy search engine robots.  All a search engine is willing to do is share some rules with you about what not to do and what the consequences are if you don’t abide to these rules.  Therein lays another trial.

Time, effort and study = SEO

The skill of successful SEO is only learned by trial and error, learning from your own past mistakes and studying what does and what doesn’t work for your competitors, and just when you think you understand how a search engines algorithms work, they change them and you are back to basics again, struggling to regain your high rankings.  They do this without warning too which means you have to be very vigilant about how your SEO campaign is functioning, and if overnight your home page plummets in rankings, you can be sure that there has been an algorithm change.  Ignoring this makes it that much harder to regain your footing later on.  There are a number of SEO forums that can keep you informed about these changes as well as offering very useful and relevant advice on how to deal with them.

It is not unusual to spend months of tweaking, changing, editing, adding, making mistakes, getting high rankings, losing them then regaining them.  SEO is a never-ending roller coast ride which makes no allowance for assumptions and not allowance for laziness or ignorance.

It takes a lot of effort, training, study and patience and if you decide to do it cheaply you will get exactly what you are paying for.  However, it is not worth losing your health, sleep and family over, if you don’t know what to do or you don’t have the time it is advisable to employ the services of a professional who can take the burden off your shoulders.  A word of advice though, even a top professional will expect a lot of active input from your side, after all it is not their livelihood, it is yours.
