SEO – The History of Search Engine Seduction
March 3rd, 2009 by Nick
SEO (search engine optimisation) developed as a result of dependency upon search engines for the success of a website.
Internet surfers use keywords and search engines to help them find useful sites (the top three being Google, Yahoo and Live Search), returned to them via results on a listed page. The greater the relevancy of keywords searched for by web spiders in the website’s content, and the more relevant HTML, the higher the final listing on the search results page.
The nature of the internet – quick, disposable and highly competitive – makes web surfers a ruthless bunch, constantly tempted by the promise of a more relevant or interesting website just a click away. Most users will only be interested in the highest listings of search results – meaning that websites have to not only successfully get the attention of the search engine in the very first instance, but they must do so impressively in order to get a higher page ranking.
In the early days of search engines, manipulative web masters employed tactics such as stuffing web pages with unrelated keywords (cramming them on the web page by hiding them behind graphics or in black type behind a black background) or manipulating HTML to gain high listings. Naturally, this damaged the credibility of search engines that were vulnerable to such abuse – users would see them as unreliable and find others – and they had to develop more complex algorithms.
With smarter and more savvy Search Engine Spiders and a greater density of websites than ever before, SEO gives website owners a change to get noticed in a media where visibility is everything.
Search engine optimisation relies on the best quality content, HTML and links to get your website noticed by search engines and users alike. There are people who still work unscrupulously (using black hat tactics) but while those may reap good results in the short term, black hat tactics can lead to your website being banned by search engines – for life.
An ethical SEO company will use well-placed and relevant keywords within good editorial content, and combine it with efficient HTML code in order to get your website optimised for search engines. It with work with the code of conduct provided by the major search engines and build the right number of relevant links to gain the highest possible listing.

Much of the problems could be solved if the company would have started their website with SEO in mind. SEO is very simple, but people just love Flash and Javascript pages… then wonder why they don’t rank high. sighhh
