The Framework Of a Search Engine

October 3rd, 2009 by

Understanding SEO techniques and how to further rankings is effective, yet search engines rules keep changing. They are constantly evolving and for this reason SEO is sometimes a hit and miss affair. Understanding the inner working of a search engine can help SEO tremendously.

A search engine follows information. It follows the paths provided and collects information along the way. It sends the information back to servers where algorithms are applied to it. It is the job of these algorithms to determine the importance of what has been sent it.

How are algorithms generated?

Algorithms are the craft of humans who have not a little experience in understanding how the internet works. It is they who use this learned experience to update algorithms. They collect and store data, sort it and make the decision of what is important and should be shared and what isn’t.

The elements of a search engine

The internet consists of what can only be likened to vital organs which take the form of connectivity, power and data centres and which have to function properly at all times.

The search engine itself is nothing more than a vehicle that goes out and gets what it needs. It is designed to be mobile and access the outside world through WebPages.
It uses Search Engine spiders to ‘see’. Their jobs are to crawl or spider their way around links and travel from one page to another as they follow them. Travelling via fiber optic connections gives them the speed they need to visit all the paths they come across.

A search engine has to be instinctive too which is defined in its core functions. This allows spiders to read specific data or ignore that which does not meet specific criteria. Being able to understand this instinct will help understand how spiders crawl a site. It is invaluable information for anyone practicing SEO.

Search engines gain their knowledge by crawling WebPages. Yet what they know is far beyond the reach of most webmaster and for that matter SEO’s. They know how to store data, present and prioritize it. They also know when they are being tricked.

A search engine bases its ranking on what they understand to be correct and organized.

Apart from properly spidering WebPages and awarding correct rankings, the internet must have the ability to detect and penalize based on its understanding of the way documents are arranged and how they are linked.

How does this help with SEO?

Understanding how search engines learn and function is vital for search engine optimization. It should deter anyone from practicing black hat techniques or trying to cut corners. Rather it should encourage what it trying to accomplish and in turn provide it with tactics that fit in to its knowledge base.

Understanding that search engines are constantly evolving will help SEO practitioners give they want they want. In return they will reward you with higher rankings. Using unethical tactics may work for a while yet just when you are starting to rely on high rankings the rugs can get pulled out from under you.
