What Search Engine Optimization is and what it isn’t
September 18th, 2009 by Michael
The lines between Search Engine Optimization are at times indistinct. When Search Engine Optimization first began it was based on keyword research.  Website owners were able to twist their sites with a few inbound links and they were optimizing and getting high rankings.
As search engines evolved the web began to be used more effectively as a way to conduct business. This meant that sites needed a lot of better quality content and a way to provide easy to use site navigation. This meant regular updates and sites that were aesthetically pleasing. While the looks of a site don’t have any real ability to help with ranking it is important to remember that within seconds people have made up their minds whether or not to shop on a website. If websites don’t offer a good impression then being able to convert a searcher in a customer is that much harder.
This encourages clients to start improving their sites layout and design. So while this isn’t technically Search Engine Optimization it does aid the whole process enormously.
Linkbait and social media
Using Linkbait as a means of promoting a website’s ranking can on one hand have very possible results as it is able to drive large numbers of visitors to a site. It has been proved that it can grow branding and attract links. Again Linkbait is not technically Search Engine Optimization but it is a means of driving traffic due to its links. However the benefit of Linkbait for Search Engine Optimization could be argued. Yet it can provide awareness on the global stage.
Social media is also technically not Search Engine Optimization but it is a good platform for sharing and demonstrating knowledge in a niche market. By the sharing of this information this can grow popularity which can help improve rankings. The criteria are being able to provide information that is interesting, fresh and relevant.
If information is not engaging it gives no reason to follow. If you are able to demonstrate your industry knowledge while connecting with those who share your interest you have turned your search engine optimization campaign into highly successful tool.
Unfortunately businesses often make the mistake of creating profiles on all social media sites and the thinking they have it taken care of. Crating a business social media site should also be kept as such. Once you start posting articles on things that have nothing to do with your niche market can result in traffic falling off.
Online marketing in its various forms
Search engine optimization as an online marketing tool can be highly beneficial if used correctly. While some strategies are not technically Search Engine Optimization they still have a place in being able to drive traffic and push rankings.
In ever changing environment goals need to be set and metrics need to be applied in order to measure performance. This applies not only to search engine optimization but to all online marketing tools. When taken as a whole they are all able to contribute a Search Engine Optimization campaign.
