What to look for when commissioning an SEO expert

May 30th, 2009 by

SEO also known as Search Engine Optimisation helps to increase your search engine rankings online by identifying the type of traffic you want to visit your website and encouraging this. SEO mostly relies on selecting key words and phrases relevant to your website so that Internet ‘spiders’ can go and investigate, retrieving information which eventually improves your web rankings.

So, in order to achieve great SEO it is recommended you commission an SEO expert. When looking to commission an SEO expert there are several aspects that should be considered. Firstly it would be beneficial to identify how exactly you think SEO could work for you, for example; are you wishing to increase your search engine rankings, would you like to see what customers are searching for, do you want to increase profits or simply expand upon your customer base?
Once the above has been identified you can then begin the task of searching for the right SEO expert for you.

Competition in the SEO work sector is high, it is essential to obtain an expert who is proactive in their SEO approach and is not afraid of the competition. Before committing to an SEO expert test their knowledge by asking them to show you pieces they have written on SEO. Viewing the work they have done for previous clients and their success on previous SEO is projects is advised, however you may not find this on their website as many SEO experts prefer to keep their success hidden from their competitors.

Dishonourable practice should not be entertained and all work of an SEO nature should reach a high standard of ethics. SEO experts should avoid spamming search engines such as Google and ensure they use the most relevant key words and phrases likely to be picked up by Internet spiders. These spiders then use their research to provide web rankings.

Do not expect an SEO expert to improve your SEO overnight, it takes time for an SEO expert to create results that will attract your desired target audience, essentially helping you to climb up the Google rankings. You may also want to aid your SEO expert by researching the key words and phrases that are being used by your competition. Ensuring you are using the same key words/phrases as your competitor will keep you fighting against the rest.

In summary, it is important to identify the reasons why you wish to improve your SEO before you look to employ an SEO expert. Ensure any expert is aware of your needs and requirements. As there is great competition among SEO companies it is advised you select an SEO who is proactive in their approach and not afraid of the competition. Furthermore, reviewing previous SEO work carried out by the expert should help you decide if this really is the right SEO expert for you. Finally confirm the SEO expert is committed to ethical practice so your name cannot be tarnished.
