Why niches are important to Search Engine Optimisation

What is a niche? Particularly, what is the meaning of a niche in the context of the World Wide Web? And why are niches so important to Search Engine Optimisation? These are questions we are increasingly familiar with. We’ve all heard a lot about how important it is to find the correct niche for Internet-based businesses. A niche is actually a particular domain of competence where a business’s strength lies. It could be a core competence, or a unique selling proposition that a business uses to differentiate itself over and above its competition.

The literal meaning of a niche is a slot or alcove. Recall the phrase a niche in the bark of a tree? Its definition lies in the very notion of confinement. This means that your business niche should ideally be an item or idea that is specific or well-defined. The niche you select for your SEO endeavour should be something for which there is established demand, and which ideally isn’t being served in the optimal way. You try to fill that gap.

What makes niches so central to Search Engine Optimisation campaigns? Well, think of it this way. The broader a search term, the more competition it has and the harder it is to rank for. Something as broad as “cars”, for example, would have much more competition than something as specific “classic cars”. The more specific a keyword is, the more descriptive it is to the particular product or service at hand. This means that you are more likely to get visitors searching for the exact product that you are selling. In this case, more isn’t better. Selling a lesser number of products, for example, could result in higher profits than trying to sell a diverse range of products and getting fewer conversions.

This also implies that businesses might be better off marketing products that are underserved on the online marketing arena. Picking your offering wisely could make a lot of difference on whether or not a search engine optimization effort succeeds or fails. A lot of businesses could do much better with picking their niche wisely.

This brings us to keyword gap analysis. Keywords are specific words that are used by searchers online in order to search for some specific product, service or information topic. Keywords are the basic building block of any search engine optimization effort. Effective keyword research is an essential prerequisite to any search engine optimization campaign, because it describes what your business is offering, what it is all about.

Keyword gaps are essentially topics that are being searched for but not adequately satisfied. In other words, websites that can adequately serve searches coming in for a particular topic keyword are not indexed in the search engines. If a business can create valuable information, products or services and describe them properly to the search engines, it can fill that particular keyword gap.
When a keyword gap is filled, it might represent the creation of a whole new niche. Keywords and niches are actually intertwined, as one can complement the other. Sometimes, keywords can result in the creation of whole new niches that had not existed before.
