Content is King - Best ways to add more content in a small space

Posted by Dan Carlyon on 06 July 2012

How would you say is the best way to add more Search Engine freindly content to your existing content when you are lacking space?

Imagine an attractive website with lots of images with little or no text content on the page. The site looks fantastic but is not getting the conversions or SERP's the website owner wants. Imagine the frustration on the client/owners face and also the programmer having nowhere to put the amazing SEO friendly content the copywriters spent hours researching and writing.

There are probably many solutions out there but here are my favorite ways to add extra content to your site. It may involving moving some elements about a bit, but in the eyes of the search engines, a thousand words are worth more than an image.

This is where i introduce you to jQuery.

The most popular.

The most popular option for adding content must be Tabbed Content.

Jquery Tabbed Content This technique is very easy to use and customise. It can be easily integrated into your site and match the style very well using such websites like jQuery Theme Roller. This site will allow you to see in real time the style you are creating so if you copy the colors from your website theme/style sheet you wil be able to easily create some tabbed content to match your website theme.

Tabbed content is very easy to add, you simply need to include the jquery and jquery UI libraries and also include your stylesheet from the jQuery Theme roller website.

  • jquery-ui-1.8.21.custom.css
  • jquery-1.7.2.min.js
  • jquery-ui-1.8.21.custom.min.js

Once you have done that we need to initialise the tabbed content with a javascript function. $('#tabs').tabs(); is enough to start the content.

That's the jquery and style sorted out, now all we have left to do is add the tabs and content to the site. This is done with an unordered list.

  1. <div id="tabs">
  2. <ul>
  3. <li><a href="#tabs-1">First</a></li>
  4. <li><a href="#tabs-2">Second</a></li>
  5. <li><a href="#tabs-3">Third</a></li>
  6. </ul>
  9. <div id="tabs-3">Nam dui erat, auctor a, dignissim quis, sollicitudin eu, felis. Pellentesque nisi urna, interdum eget, sagittis et, consequat vestibulum, lacus. Mauris porttitor ullamcorper augue.</div>
  10. </div>

As you can see from this bit of html we have our initial div which is being initialised in the function we just added followed by the unordered list. This list s where you will find the titles of the content, try and make these keywords to do with th content you are adding. After the list you have divs for each tab, conaining the content you wish to add. The great thing about this method is that you have 3 lots of content here all fitting into the space of 1 lot of content and it will all be searched and indexed by the search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN. If you searched in google for tabbed content you would find many, many versions of the plugin however nothing really beats doing it from scratch yourself. It is simple and easier to customise to fit in with your website.

What other options are there?

There are also other jquery UI options including accordions but one of my favorites has to be, bxslider. I found it online accidently but since i found it i have integrated into websites. BX Content SliderIt is very customisable both theme wise and jQuery wise. It is, in essence, is a content slider. What sets BXSlider out from the rest is you can use text aswell as images in the slider. Custimisation us amazing. If you didn't want a slider you could have it fade automatically through the content, working the same as tabbed content, only without the tabs. AS you can see there is almost nothing to it, making it easy to inegrate into a site theme wise. There are so many options to pick from but best of all, despite the number of available options it still isn't complicated or confusing.

Both of these methods will help you add that SEO content to your page with little effort and trouble. Content is a massive part of search engine optimisation now and adding content isn't always easy to do when you don't have a lot of space. All these mthods will allow google to find that content, find how relative it is to the page and that awesome content you have in the tabs or slider can help you get the SERPs you want.

I hope i have enlihtened you to possible solutions for adding more content in a very little space.
