The Conflict Between Black and White SEO

September 11th, 2009 by

In this day and age almost everyone has heard about search engine optimization. It is the internet phenomenon that is taking the online world by storm. Although it is not something new, many people are not very familiar with this aid.

Search engine optimization is a great way to give a website visibility. It is used to increase the ranking of a site on search engine results page’s and through this it improves the flow of traffic to a site as well as the quality of traffic.

SEO is often concerned with the entire structure of a site. Content development is very important as well as the inclusion of relevant keywords.

There are two sides to search engine optimization, the good side and then there is the bad side. Good SEO is usually referred to as white hat SEO and black hat SEO is the bad. It is often debated as to whether black hat SEO should even be allowed and how the online world can get rid of this type of search engine optimization.

What is black hat SEO and why is it so popular?

You will always find a website online that makes use of black hat SEO. This means that they employ unethical and deceitful means to attract traffic onto their sites and get high ranking.

Although high ranking can be achieved through regular white SEO, making use of black hat tricks can be faster. This is therefore the main reason why black hat SEO is so popular. People are very impatient and cannot wait months before they reach the ranking that they desire.

The way black hat SEO is employed includes anything from adding hidden text to a website or making use of misleading back links. Hidden text basically means that the text that is placed on the site is the same as the website’s background. Misleading back links, on the other hand, lure guests onto a site via irrelevant links.

These black hat tricks may enable quicker results but the problem with them is that they could lead to your site being banned or penalised. Top search engines do not allow black hat tricks and often scout out to see which sites are making use of them. By being punished for using black hat SEO there is a possibility that your website may also get a bad reputation amongst internet users.

White is right

So now that you know that black hat tricks are bad, it is time to turn your attention to white hat techniques. White hat SEO is the opposite of black hat tricks. This means that when you employ white hat search engine optimization, you are making use of ethical and legit SEO without any tricks to place yourself ahead.

Ranking of your website is achieved based on your relevance to a search and not because you have created a deceitful way of getting high ranking. Your traffic is also drawn in naturally and not through manipulation.
