Getting site users to engage more

December 9th, 2009 by

The main stated aim of any SEO campaign is to boost the ranking of a site, but this is in itself misleading. The real aim of any such process is to improve the function of its site as a business tool. In most cases, this means an increase in engagement between the users and the site.

There are many reasons users fail to go further than just browsing a site. Sometimes the site sends the wrong message. Sometimes the site has unintentional blocks that put users off. An awareness of the potential problems can help you avoid them. Any site can benefit from some consideration of how to improve conversion rates. One problem sites commonly run into is a difficulty getting users to commit to registration. Traffic may be high and the bounce rate low, but somehow the site’s subscription rate stays the same. In a lot of cases, the sign-up process itself is at fault.

Whenever you want a visitor to perform any action, you need to make it as easy for them as possible. This means that it has to be seamless, or as close to seamless as possible. Does the user have to go out of their way to sign up? Do they have to invest a significant amount of time to do so? What exactly are they getting in return? If you require a lot of information from your users, think of ways to break up the process, or provide incentives that will encourage them to register.

Particularly if you feature e-commerce on your site, one of the main goals for your Search Engine Optimisation will be a high conversion rate. There are many reasons a greater amount of traffic might not be achieving this business goal. One of the main ones is if your content is sending the wrong message. Users may be happy to accept information from you but reluctant to buy. This means high traffic, high SERPs but low revenue.

One of the things you can do is make information as clear as possible concerning your products, including product specifications and quality images. Consider the queries users are likely to have, and answer as many questions as possible.

A feeling of safety is essential when users are handing over information of any kind. If you have any e-commerce on your site, providing secure options for payment is basic and vital. Having a number of options for payment, including PayPal and card options, lets users know that their choices are important to you. Prominent statements regarding the handling of private information also contributes to a feeling of security on the site.

It’s too much for an SEO company to promise to increase your revenue, and indeed not many companies would even discuss revenue when talking with new clients. However, the ultimate aim of a good SEO company is to improve things for your business. This means that all your business goals should be taken into account when the SEO plan is being developed. Our experts at SEO Consult can assist with this.
