The Right and Wrong Ways to do Search Engine Optimisation

May 20th, 2009 by

In regards to any business, it is important to have their website easily accessed on the internet. When looking for a particular business or service, the majority of people use search engines to find what they are looking for and it is therefore important that your company site ranks quite highly in the search engine results in order to maximise the relevant traffic to your website. The main way of doing this is using Search Engine Optimisation. Search Engine Optimisation is the term used to describe the creation of new content, which is relevant for your company and contains as many keywords as possible. “Keywords” are the terms relating to your services or product, which may be used in a Search Engine search. By including as many of these words in the new content on your website, you can gradually move higher up the rankings in the search engine results.

In the domain of Search Engine Optimisation there are two main categories; white hat SEO, which is used to describe techniques approved by search engines and black hat SEO, which search engines do not approve of. White hat SEO is generally seen as a long-term technique whereas black hat SEO is usually a short-term method as the users can expect their site to be banned, either temporarily or permanently, by the search engine providers.

White hat SEO, or good ways of doing SEO, is used to describe methods, which involve no deception. It ensures that the user travelling to the website will be met with content that they expect to see. The newly uploaded content will make sense and be relevant to the website while still incorporating the keywords. In other words, the content is created for the users rather than the search engines.

Bad ways of doing Search Engine Optimisation or black hat methods are often deceptive and highly disapproved of. Some of the techniques used include concealing text on the page either by having it in a similar colour to the background or positioning it off the screen or cloaking, i.e. providing different versions of the website page depending on whether it is being requested by a person or a search engine. Although these techniques ensure a high volume of traffic to your site initially, they are often misled and have no interest in your site. Also, by risking being banned from the search engine, this will also have a harmful effect on the business.

The right ways of doing SEO are the most effective in the long run. It not only ensures a lot of traffic to your website but also that the people directed there will be relevant and interested in your business. It also eliminates the risk of having your site banned from the search engine results due to poor SEO practice. When carried out properly, Search Engine Optimisation can be extremely effective in improving the flow of people through your website and therefore improve your business.
