Why is Hidden Text an Unethical SEO Method?

May 15th, 2010 by

There are many different techniques commonly used within SEO campaigns and some of these methods are considered ethical and some are not. The use of black hat SEO methods can result in your website being penalised by the search engines. Sites found to be using unethical techniques are punished with low rankings and some are even banned from the search results completely. If you want to help your business as much as you possibly can, you must only use white hat SEO techniques within your SEO campaign.

Any attempt at manipulating the search engines is viewed as unacceptable. How unethical certain black hat methods are can vary but using any black hat SEO technique is putting your business at risk and damaging its potential in the future.

Hidden text is one popular unethical black hat SEO method often used by businesses running an SEO campaign. Using hidden text to try and manipulate the search engines involves text rich in keywords being created in the same colour of the background of the web pages of a website. When text is the same colour, it cannot easily be seen by visitors to the site, if noticed at all.

The point of this is to attract the attention and interest of the search engines using the keywords present in the hidden text. The web crawlers will notice this content but the quality of the content visitors to your website see is not compromised.

Site owners know keywords make a difference and content is of huge importance. However, it is also important not to clutter your web pages and stuff them with numerous keywords and as much content as possible. Hidden text can seem to be a suitable alternative.

However, because this text is hidden from plain view and is designed for the purpose of attracting and informing the search engines, this is an attempt at search engine manipulation and is a black hat SEO method. Therefore, the consequences of using this technique can be disastrous.

Hidden text has been a method used for many years and the search engines are aware of it. They have technology to spot hidden text and even if a site gets away with using text like this for a little while, it will be found out in the end. Sites found to be featuring hidden text in their web pages will be punished. Their rankings will drop considerably and they may even be banned from the search results provided by search engines in the future.

Don’t ruin your SEO campaign by using unethical SEO methods which will damage your reputation and chances of success. Hidden text is not beneficial and what you must focus on is regularly creating high quality and relevant content for your website. It is text like this the search engines look for and reward.

At SEO Consult, we only use ethical SEO methods because we understand the importance of a white hat SEO campaign. We can explain to you why black hat SEO is not recommended and show you how you can achieve SEO success ethically.
