Geo Targeting Search Engine Optimisation

Basically Geo targeting is a way to return searches that are area specific. This can include regions, provinces, cities and even countries. Google for instance uses your ISP or Internet Service Provider in order to determine where you are located and then returns results based on that. If you live in Sussex for instance you will get results relevant to Sussex.

From a SEO point of view this is good news. Campaigns that rely on Geo targeting tend to be more successful.

SEO uses processes and techniques to generate quality traffic from search engine pages. Web traffic has no boundaries so searches starting in London can land on a website advertising their services in Timbuktu. Searches are conducted in different languages too and as such SEO has proved invaluable for driving searches to each and every type of website regardless of layout, navigation or style.

Yet Geo targeting takes these results one step further as it can increase the success of businesses that promote products across not only different areas but also across different cultures.

Geo targeting design

Websites that deal internationally need to have a few different versions of their site, each one targeting a particular language. It is possible to configure the same version according to location automatically. In designing a website to fit this criteria it is necessary to provide for style and taste of users. For instance, a website targeting a US market has better success rate if it is designed by a design firm based there.

Geo targeting also relies on user settings. For instance it identifies the user’s keyword settings, location and language. So websites need to display different versions that fit with user’s location.

Promoting Geo targeting

Search results from major search engines provide results that are based on firstly what users are looking and secondly on the location the search stems from. This means that a searcher in the UK will get different results than a searcher in Australia even though they are using the same terms and the same search engine.

Search engines also rank websites around what links are being pointed to and where they are coming from. A website will be ranked higher in the area or country it gets most of its links from.
