PR – PageRank and its importance

January 21st, 2008 by

PageRank is the system developed by Google originators Larry Page and Sergey Brin, it gives each and every single webpage on the World Wide Web a rank on their relevance to their subject. Page Rank or PR can be viewed in a Google toolbar as a numerical value of 0-10, 0 being the weakest and least important and 10 being the highest and most authoritative. The system is constantly updated and it’s not unfamiliar to see sites constantly moving up and down.

PageRank is achieved by way of a voting system, where sites will be judged on the quantity of incoming links to your site, and the quality of the site from which the link came. The higher the PageRank of your site the more likely you are of achieving decent listings for designated keywords, hence the importance of relevancy. (PR = Relevancy + Authority)
When you receive a link from a high PR site (site A) it is estimated that 85% of their PR will be passed on to your site (site B), but the more outgoing links from site A will reduce the value of the PR that is passed on.

This is where “nofollow” comes into the equation, if you add rel=”nofollow” to an outbound link then PR will be ignored and no value passed on.

Despite the sophistication of this system developed as long ago as 1995, it is open to manipulation, both legitimate and illegitimate Search Engine Optimisaton. By gaining links in exchange for money from high PR sites will in turn inflate your PR, these links are naturally expensive so purists are firmly against paid links. This was cracked down on last year by Google, implying through the media that any paid inbound links would be discredited.

At SEO Consult we have great knowledge and experience with Google PageRank and their algorithms, we also have a good working relationship with Google and have achieved vast success in natural listings. For more information please call 08701451017 or alternatively complete an online SEO form.
