SEO shortcuts do not equal profits

Many website owners who struggle to get exposure for their sites usually rely on a powerful marketing tool known as search engine optimisation. The internet is a big place where millions of websites are competing against each other to get the most visitors. They all want to reach the top on search engine results pages and by employing an aid such as SEO, their chances are dramatically increased.

Search engine optimization in a nutshell, is a technique that increases the ranking of a website and improves its traffic flow and quality. It focuses on the overall design of the website and its content. This means that in order for SEO to be successfully employed, an existing website might have to change its content or edit its HTML source code. A website that employs SEO from scratch has to be designed in such a way that it can be clearly detected by search engines such as Google or Yahoo.

When you change the content of a site, you are looking at things like adding relevant keywords, adding back links and placing articles that help optimise the site. All these elements work together and make for a stronger SEO campaign and ultimately mean a greater amount of visitors to a site.

Many website owners like the idea of greater exposure for their sites. They see SEO as a life saver in the massive World Wide Web. Unfortunately they also have no patience and wish to see results quicker. This is when they make use of shortcuts known as black hat search engine optimization.

Black hat techniques for quicker results

While SEO is a great marketing tool that yields excellent results, it is often a slow process. Its effect may only be visible months after its application. This often leads to website owners making use of black hat tricks. Black hat techniques are the unethical application of SEO which misleads traffic to a site or illegitimately improves its ranking.

An example of black hat SEO is the use of hidden text on a website. A website owner will cleverly add text onto a site for a search engine to detect which is the same colour as the background of the website. This means that the text is not visible. The text that is however visible, does not relate to the keywords searched for by the user.

Black hat tricks also include a flooding of keywords on a website. Although white hat tricks require the addition of many keywords, it should be relevant. Black hat techniques on the other hand, involve many irrelevant keywords that result in the content making little sense.

What do shortcuts lead to?

Although black hat SEO is a shortcut to achieve better ranking and an improved flow of traffic in a faster period of time, they often lead to detrimental results. Those relying on these shortcuts may end up with a website that is penalised or even banned by top search engines.
