Why link building is crucial to SEO
January 4th, 2008 by Dan
Search Engine Optimisation is a field that encompasses both on page as well as off page optimisation. While on page optimisation is something that can be performed immediately as and when required, off page optimisation and link building is a practice that involves many variables and unknowns.
Search engines such as Google soon discovered that incoming hyperlinks could be considered as votes for the relevance of a website to a particular keyword. Google pioneered an algorithm that treated link popularity, or the quality and quantituy of incoming links, as a critical factor in ranking.
However, can link popularity be increased systematically? Is there really a method to the madness? At SEO Consult, we believe there is. Just getting more and more links isn’t the right way of going about link building. Links must also be relevant, legitimate, and of a suitable Page Rank.Furthermore, links must be placed at appropariate areas on the page to reflect a semantic relevance to the targetted website.
Link building must be performed organically. This means that it must appear natural, so that the link provides a value to the human reader. The hyperlink should ideally impart a relevant elaboration or extention to the information available to the person at that particular place on the Web.
