Mobile phone Search Engine Optimisation
May 7th, 2009 by Nick
Mobile phone marketing is fast growing and so too is search engine optimisation (SEO) for this strand of online marketing.
There are distinct differences between SEO for PCs and SEO for mobile phones. The most obvious difference is the size of the screens – your PC is far bigger than a mobile phone screen. This is a major reason why the user experience between the two differs greatly. People who use their mobile phones to search the web are generally looking for quick results with as little page navigation as possible. Mobile phone websites therefore need to be much simpler to navigate and should have very little design detail and imagery. The content on each webpage should be given is small nuggets, and should be precise to the search result.
While traditional Search Engine Optimisation techniques still apply to mobile phone webpages, there are differences of how search engines treat the two online platforms. For this reason and because of the different user experience it’s not viable to duplicate your PC webpage content for mobile phone use. This is the main rule when understanding SEO for mobile phone websites – don’t duplicate your webpages for mobile phone website, rather adapt them.
Get your website optimised for mobile phones:
Become mobile compliant
To tap into the mobile phone online market you’ll first need to get your website mobile compliant. Keep your mobile phone pages simple, with mainly text only, and ensure the pages are easy to navigate. Use W3C compliant XHTML code to update your mobile webpages so they comply with the basic standards.
Relevant content
Only place relevant content on your mobile phone webpages. Make sure the content is minimal and easy to read – so only include the important items. Your font sizes shouldn’t be too small or too large. Don’t forget to keep your website’s navigation tools clearly visible as it’s very frustrating trying to move around webpages via a mobile phone website and they’re not easily located.
Use regular SEO processes
Use traditional SEO methods to optimise your website for mobile phone online searches. So although the content is much simpler still use keywords, proper page titles, relevant content and headlines, and incoming links.
Mobile website sitemap
When you’ve completed your mobile phone sitemap send it to search engines for indexation so it can be called up in page results.
Mobile phone website domain
It’s useful to know that a .mobi domain is not compulsory to enable your website to cross over to the mobile platform. You can use .com and other domain extensions.
