On-page Elements That Make or Break SEO

March 12th, 2010 by

The main elements of SEO are the practical things you do to your pages. When it comes to the work of search engine optimisation, people tend to get caught up in individual steps. Picking the exact placement of one word or rearranging your titles is important. Before you get to this stage, it’s important to consider some of the bigger things that affect your on-page factors.

SEO planning should have a hierarchy. Start with your business goals, look at your existing site, and then figure out what you want to do. When planning for individual pages, keep these things in mind:

Unique offers for internet users. It sounds like a headline from some cheesy sales copy, but you need to define your unique value proposition and sell it to your target users. In other words, you need to figure out exactly what it is that sets your business apart from your competitors, convey this in your title and description tags, and follow through with it on your pages. Your SEO consultant can help you to work your unique offer into your SEO plans, and you can discuss this with us at SEO Consult.

A uniform tone. Your site is made up of a series of elements. If there’s one thing that SEO teaches, it’s that elements need to work together for a site to be successful. Know the tone of your site and do whatever you can to ensure everything works toward sending the same message.

You might find, in the course of your SEO preparation that you need to alter your site’s tone. Different groups of internet users will react better to different approaches. Sometimes, a site with a friendly tone will put target user groups off. Many sites are hobbled in the SEO process because they are set on a certain tone. Search engine optimisation presents your business with an opportunity to learn what your users want, and to adapt your site to suit them.

Keywords and key phrases. It’s not just the selection of these that matters. It’s how you use them. The importance of keyword placement and keyword density quickly become clear when you first enter the world of search engine optimisation, but the importance of a subtle approach is hardly ever talked about. Choosing the right writer and the right content is vital. Keywords can easily stick out like a sore thumb in your content if you’re not careful. The content surrounding your keywords needs to embrace them.

Attention to detail. Studies have shown that the smallest of touches can alter a user’s perception of your site significantly. SEO experts have found that the simple method of allowing white space around blocks of text keeps users on pages for longer. A tiny little touch like including a border on your menu can boost a user’s confidence in your professionalism and turn over a conversion. It really can be that simple. Find out what your user group trusts and likes, and keep these things in mind when making changes for SEO.
