Onpage Techniques For SEO Success
January 25th, 2010 by Nick
Onpage optimisation is the process of editing and amending your website code to increase search engine rankings. There are a number of methods which everybody in the SEO industry is aware of, but with Google’s constantly evolving algorithms these techniques are no longer as powerful as they once were.
This poses the question what are the core factors in which a robot visiting a website will be looking for, and therefore this is what our team of SEO experts at SEO Consult have decided are key to SEO success.
User Driven Content
The phrase “Content Is King” is still applicable, this theory is proven when searching for any generic term, sites that rank well will generally have a good amount of content that discusses the phrase that was searched. The mistake a lot of webmasters make is creating content that is either too spammy (too much repetition) or not enough text flowing through the page (image heavy). As the header of this section suggests having information that is user driven is key, keep that in mind and eventually you will get your reward.
Meta tag Optimisation
Meta tags and more importantly title tags are sill critical for helping a search engine discover what a page is about, keep this information decisive and informative and match keywords from the content that’s on the page. This will give the page more authority on a handful of terms and will provide better rankings accordingly.
Internal Linking
Crawlers work by following links, whether these be internal or external that’s how they know a page exists. Keeping a clear link path to all areas of the site is a must, but having a clear site structure is imperative. If you have a link to every page of your website from the homepage, on a 1000 page website the authority (PageRank) will be split 1000 ways, break it down to 100 it will be split 100 ways and they will be allocated more authority. This is important when a site has generic category levels or pages with more generic keywords than others.
Broken Links
When we think of the internet in its most basic form, it’s a web of pages connected by links. When these links are mistyped or to a page that has been removed this essentially stops the web from working efficiently. Also from a user perspective taking visitors to a page that doesn’t exist isn’t good business. This is why Google’s Webmaster Tools guidance is important to keep on top of; it will only serve to make a better user experience, the ultimate goal of all search engines.
