Bad SEO Techniques

September 17th, 2008 by

SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is widely regarded as one of the most
beneficial forms of online marketing; it can generate large levels of targeted
traffic for your web pages at comparatively very little cost. Qualified leads
can be directed every hour of the day to the most important and relevant pages
of your website which is why SEO is such a heavily discussed topic. The fact
that search engines do not willingly release specific details about the algorithms
they use does leave some room for translation but a lot is certainly known
of what are considered to be bad SEO techniques.

Unethical SEO Techniques

Bad, or unethical SEO techniques not only set your SEO back by several steps
but can actually see a web page and entire site banned from the index of a
search engine. The ultimate goal of each of the search engines is to offer
a list of relevant, high quality websites to their users. By penalising those
sites that they believe to have used unethical methods of SEO, the search engines
are attempting to safe guard their own interests and continue to offer high
quality results.

Manipulation Is Bad

Search engines consider any practice that is undertaken solely to manipulate
their result pages as being unethical. Basically, if you do something that
has no benefit to the end user and has been performed only to help you rise
a couple of positions in the results then there is a very real chance that
the search engines will deem this to be unethical and penalise you for doing
so. In reality, of course, it can prove difficult for search engines to pick
up on all of the habits used by unethical SEO services.

Unethical Techniques

Cloaked or hidden text, doorway pages, and duplicate sites are among the most
widely penalised websites. Search engines do not believe these methods have
any genuine place in their rankings and so they will penalise, or at least
not offer the same benefit, to pages that use these techniques. Keyword spamming
within the main body of content and within alt and HTML tags is also seen in
the same light and is likely to lead to similar results for any pages that
use these techniques.

Devalued SEO Practices

Certain other practices have also been devalued. While you may not be directly
penalised for practices such as reciprocal links, a page is becoming increasingly
unlikely to generate too big a benefit from these practices. Essentially they
can necessitate a lot of work and offer very little reward in return so are
again best avoided.

Avoiding Bad SEO Techniques

SEO can generate excellent levels of targeted traffic. By using ethical SEO
techniques, it is possible to indicate to search engines that one of your pages
is relevant to a particular topic and keyword. By further indicating the relevance
and value of that page, you can rank highly in the results for those keywords.
Avoiding the use of unethical SEO methods should be considered an essential
part of your campaign.

Duplicate content is another big no-no. Search engines index only wants original content, not the same things too many times. When duplicate content is detected, only one of them is likely to be indexed, and others probably end up in the dreaded supplemental index. These pages duplicated won’t rank well.

  2. Hernandez says:

Do not add senseless keywords to your page. It may help senior for a while but not worth the risk of being penalized by search engines. The integrity of your site could also suffer if it has unnecessary text on your site.

  3. Gonzalez says:

Doorway pages are also a very bad idea. These pages are designed specifically to draw traffic from search engine to your site.

  4. Paula Young says:

The search engines companies hate any attempt to show her something different from the spiders observed by users and of course, want to provide the widest range of relevant results as possible. So, dislike this technique.

  5. While using other people’s content protected by copyright without their permission or while using the content that promotes legal violations, you can get banned from search engines.
