Being Sympathetic To SEO Work
February 14th, 2009 by Dan
How many people, who are not in the industry, really understand what search engine optimisation is all about? A recent survey done by The Guardian in the UK revealed some rather interesting results. From the survey it came to light that not too many people on the street know what optimisation is and how the search engines rank websites. From this survey ensued a heated debate in the online forums and blogs.
Some felt that it really does not matter to people about optimisation and they should not bother about it. All they should know is how to find what they are searching for. Others felt that the survey was skewed, as it should have been directed at people who are in marketing and involved in online business. If you do not have a website and use the Internet mainly to search for products, it is your choice not to know how optimisation works.
Is it wasting time to find out facts?
For any business who wants to have and maintain an online presence, the game changes totally. Firstly it must be said that business and website owners do not have to experts in the field of optimisation. What they must have is a basic knowledge of what it involves. If there is not an understanding of exactly how much work goes into creating a SEO campaign, it is easy to dismiss it as not important.
This is not arrogance; people often dismiss things they do not really understand. With an online marketing campaign though, it is responsible and smart to know what your consultant is actually doing to get your business high visibility and make people take notice of your company. Too many people still have totally unrealistic ideas and expectations of what optimising should achieve for their business.
Knowledge changes attitudes
Once an entrepreneur has been given the basic understanding either by self-education or by his consultant, a new world opens up. This is when attitudes change from ‘can’t be bothered’ to ‘let us work together and get my business listed’. Knowing exactly what you are paying your SEO consultant to do, how many hours of his time it takes and how complicated it is, changes your outlook.
It is only once the intricacies of optimisation are no longer a total mystery that a healthy working relationship develops between entrepreneur and consultant. Looking at all the many aspects that comprises a fully functional optimisation campaign is an eye opener.
A sympathetic outlook benefits your business
With a more sympathetic view of search engine optimisation comes the understanding that it is a time-consuming project and offers no magical quick-fixes that can happen overnight. This means that you understand that patience is needed to reach the goals set with the campaign.
It lessens needless frustration and promotes a harmonious working relationship between entrepreneur and consultant. This is when things change to a win-win situation for both your business and your consultant. Your business reaps the benefits and your consultant can do his job thoroughly.
