Beware of the snake oil salesmen
May 4th, 2009 by Nick
The snake oil salesmen of old went around in their wagons touting their miracle cures to all the villagers. Today those same shady characters have websites and tout their miracle SEO “cures” to trusting website owners. They swear high and mighty oaths that they will get you number one ranking in the search engines within a week and it will only cost you X-amount. The fact is that SEO has no secrets and there is no mystical swami that can wave his hands and your website suddenly ranks number one. To build a successful optimisation campaign takes time, effort, skill and above all, knowledge. To understand SEO you need to learn how it works, what is myth and what is logical fact.
Hidden secret formulas
Your SEO consultant has no mystical formulas hidden in a cupboard that he can use to analyse, formulate and calculate how to optimise your website and web pages. The formulas universally used are no secret. They use logical and scientific methodologies to analyse sets of SEO aspects, they follow sets of rules and work their way through these. These formulas are not rigid as they change every time that the search engine algorithms change. Nothing mystical at all, simply time spent to learn these formulas. For the inexperienced there are web based tools and applications to use as guidance for basic optimisation. What must be realised is that these tools cannot replace the experience that a skilled SEO consultant has.
Complicated and impossible to understand methods
The scientific methods used in the optimisation of websites, web pages and blogs are not impossible to understand. Neither is it too complicated to make sense to the average human being. The scientific method used is based on the specific needs of a client, the approach needed to solve the needs of that client and then testing the solutions to see if it works. Then repeat the process if there are glitches until it works. Then finally reporting the results to the specific client. This is the “complicated scientific methods” in a nutshell.
Prerequisites for number one ranking
You do not have to be the biggest lad to be leader of the gang. It is the smartest, most resourceful and the one that can be the most creative who ends up leading the gang. SEO works this way as well and top dog does not stay top dog indefinitely without effort either. Bigger brand names have the obvious advantage that they have become household names in certain ways.
Search engines though places relevancy above brand during a search. This means that a much younger brand can rank number one over big brand names. This happens if the smaller brand is more relevant during a search than the big brand. This is where long tail keyword searches come into their own; this boosts the relevance sky high in a search for s specific search term or phrase. This means SEO may be complicated, yet it is logical and simple when practiced by an experienced and reputable SEO consultant.

I think this goes along with the saying “if it sounds too good to be true…” SEO doesn’t happen magically overnight. It takes expertise and hard work.
