Does Link Baiting Have A Place In Ethical SEO

April 15th, 2009 by

There are many issues concerning SEO that cause intense debates. People speak of white hat SEO and black hat SEO and how the search engines look at various forms of marketing and optimisation efforts. There are also many stories doing the rounds of unscrupulous keyword stuffing and that search engines will then ignore your website. The Internet is the biggest rumour monger in the world and it can become bewildering to decide what is fact and what is myth.

What exactly is link baiting?

Simply put; link baiting is making use of creative ways to build links and finding ways to get people to visit your website or a specific web page. The scope and ways to do link baiting is virtually unlimited as it comes in many forms. For example, you can use a tantalising article or a riveting image to generate interest. You can do it by offering free tools or intricate puzzles and people love the enticement of a contest. Some consider these forms of link baiting to not be above board, yet it is an important part of an SEO campaign.

Improve your search page ranking

Link baiting is a relatively easy way to build links in a fast way and draw attention to your website. It gives you many alternative ways to bring your website to the attention of people and give them the opportunity to find out what you have to offer them. If your baiting efforts are innovative and catchy, people will forward the information to their friends and acquaintances.

This is a wonderful way of getting a much wider exposure at no extra cost. This increase in traffic to your website has the potential of a higher conversion rate and an increase in customers. The improvement in your ranking comes from the increase in good back links. Your reputation will be enhanced when your links are picked up by established websites that have a well-established and positive reputation themselves.

Quality web content sustains long term link baiting

If you have a website that offer visitors top quality content you can achieve long term results from your link baiting. When you use link baiting actively you build a reputation and image by providing not only interesting, but also useful information to your website visitors. This means that by using a well received link baiting system you firstly generate interest.

This interest is then backed up with your superior web content that result in repeat visits from users. This means you get sustainable web traffic from your successful link baiting and one of the important goals of any search engine optimisation campaign is to generate a steady flow of repeat visitors.

The all important factor in link baiting is to plan your baiting strategy precisely and to be able to back it up with web content that is memorable. Without combining these two factors your traffic will drop off over time. This means ultimately that your link baiting efforts were in vain.
