With any business, the road to success is a long and hard one but one of the key factors is effective marketing. The marketing spectrum is broad from television to the more traditional methods of newspapers. With the emergence of the Internet, it too has become a remarkable marketing medium.

The Internet is advantageous to the ones previously mentioned, as it is cheap, stretches across the globe to everyone with Internet access, and allows small businesses to compete with the large corporations equally. This being said, one of the most popular forms of Internet marketing is via a well constructed website and the search engine optimization (SEO) campaign.

SEO involves the increase of quality traffic to a website by using search engines. The aim is to reach a high site ranking once a search for a certain search term has occurred. To achieve this, a number of SEO techniques must be applied. This can be done privately through research and a lot of effort; alternatively, there are many companies that specialize in SEO services.

SEO Tips

One of the basic and most crucial components of an SEO campaign is the use of keywords. The choice and application of keywords is a tactic. Keywords give a description of what the website is about and should be used in all the WebPages of the website.

Selecting the correct and most effective keywords requires research. A broad range of keywords that potential buyers may use is the way to go. It is also advisable to use specific keywords or phrases, allowing a better search rank since many users would fine tune their searches. For keyword assistance, many tools are available such as Google Adwords and Keyword spy.

Furthermore, meta tags such as title, description and keyword tags optimization is vital to obtain better rankings. These tags are HTML codes consisting of the main keywords or phrases of a webpage. Meta tags are important because they are used for indexing by the search engine spiders.

The use of links is also important in SEO considering that they are portals to a website. When the website is being promoted by another website, the way the advertisement is being described is important. The use and number of links is like social networking. The more the merrier.
SEO campaign expectations

SEO campaigns are usually managed by a Webmaster so the website owners do not know what to expect and let the Webmaster take control. However, the more the owner knows the better they can plan their business.

Various tasks should be expected such as optimization and updating of the website and its Meta tags. Webmasters should provide monthly reports that include the ranking, new keywords, recommendations and an analysis of the website’s statistics. One should also expect realistic results such as high conversion rates with people that buy from the website and not just visitors. Lastly, it is important for the Webmaster and site owner to keep communication open for the best results.

    Something you didn’t really touch on in the blog was how much time Search Engine Optimisation can take to produce results – maybe that is tomorrow’s blog? Obviously because of the nature of search engines (ever changing) and as SEO isn’t an exact science, Search Engine Optimisation can take different amounts of time to show noticable results for different websites, even if pretty much exactly the same SEO work has been done on all. This could be for a number of reasons e.g the competition for certain keywords is greater for one site than another’s keywords. Whatever the reasons, Search Engine Optimization is a great marketing tool but it just takes time to grow.
