How To Survive In The Search Engine Jungle
March 21st, 2010 by Peter
As time goes by, the search industry is getting tougher. It seems like it’s getting harder and harder for the little guy to establish a foothold in the search engine results pages. Search engine optimisation can only do so much when you’re up against big competitors.
One consolation is that it’s getting just as difficult for the big guys as well. Although big corporations have obvious advantages, such as budgets to pay for advertising campaigns and huge websites, they also have significant disadvantages. The corporate culture is often the thing that strangles internet opportunities for big sites.
Whether you’re big or little, there are things you can do to establish yourself as a real presence on the net.
*Build your brand: Having a well-known brand is a big advantage both online and offline. Brands encapsulate an entire image about a business in just one word. When internet users see the word ‘Google’, they immediately know what the subject is, and have a certain image in their head. They also force information about the other search engines off to the side. Establishing your brand can help you become predominant in your industry. Your search engine optimisation campaign can help establish your brand, and you can discuss this with us at SEO Consult.
It’s thought that the search engines are less likely to impose penalties on sites that have big brands, because the brand itself is valuable to the search engine. This hasn’t been firmly established, but is an interesting idea.
*Become known as an authority: This is the path many smaller business operators have taken when they want to increase their online presence. It’s a tempting path because anyone can do it, regardless of their resources. The only thing you need is knowledge of your subject and the ability to communicate it.
The increase in awareness of how valuable being an ‘authority’ does mean that competition to be that authority has increased as well. However, there is plenty of room in any industry for several authorities on various niche subjects. There is also room for a new face in any established knowledge circle. As long as you know your stuff, you’ve got a chance of making an impact.
*Become impossible to copy: If you can’t be replaced by anyone else, it’s much harder for your competitors to edge you out over time. This is a handy thing to nurture after your SEO has established your pages where you want them in the rankings. It can also come in handy when you’re in the process of SEO. The unique combination of forum, blog, information, product search or whatever angles you choose will help you get an edge on the competition and keep them away.
*Be the only one of your kind: This is a little harder to achieve. Being the only one of your kind is almost the same as being irreplaceable. If internet users can’t find your information, products or services anywhere else, they have no option but to come to you. Note that you only need to seem like one of a kind for this to work.
