Major companies hamper their own SEO efforts
April 16th, 2009 by Dan
One of the most contradictory statements to make concerning search engine optimisation is to state that the majority of successful companies neglect optimising their websites. Yet if you speak to some of the big boys in the SEO world they will confirm this. The big companies expect that their highly distinguished name will automatically ensure them a high ranking in the search engine search results pages.
Optimisers find that the websites of these large companies experience many optimising problems with their websites that can be easily resolved with proper SEO practices, yet these companies do not deem it important enough to do this to increase their online visibility.
One of the top aspects that big companies neglect is the important factor of the different languages for different countries. They feel it is simply not cost effective and involved too many man hours to host a website in the respective language for each country and instead they run everything under a top level domain. The result of this is that the companies will not appear when searches are conducted that is within the country.
Instead the website shows up in all searches run in a language that it is active in. Without duplicate language filters though, it does not show up in a inside-country search.
Sharpness of entrepreneurship has been lost
The big companies neglect maintenance of their websites or have a skewed idea of what maintenance involves. The majority of them try to simplify maintenance by adding pages continuously without any optimisation efforts going into this. It boils down to the fact that large companies want to please their shareholders by keeping costs down as much as possible and using innovative SEO will cost money and is also seen as wasting time. This results in a totally optimisation unfriendly management of their content. What they do not understand is that innovative SEO will bring an increase in revenue for the company with increased web traffic.
A lumbering giant
In large companies everything happens at a snail’s pace with every step of optimisation being hampered. There are simply too many people from the legal department, marketing, sales, finance and the different teams that are in charge to see that the integrity of the company is maintained involved in each decision. They all have to scrutinize and approve every single item. By the time the entire diverse group of people has consensus and approves an SEO strategy it has been butchered into meaningless junk that has zero impact. Large companies fall off the wagon when it comes to portal pages that target specialized audiences as they simply assume that all their clients think the in exactly the same way.
In this way they miss out on new and lucrative markets with specific groups and specific products. Yes, large companies are where they are for good reason, but without innovation and optimisation they start to stagnate. This means that gaps open up slowly all over and this gives the sharp and hungry small entrepreneurs exactly the openings they search for. The world of business is simply too competitive for any company, even if they are huge, to give up a higher success level because of company red tape and being penny wise and pound foolish.
